Pop round for dinner in Palm Mar

You know you have been looking for a good excuse to go and explore Palm Mar, after all the good things you have heard about it. So how about a good look around the luxury developments, the fabulous sea view, the unspoilt beach and the sernenity that has made it such a property investment hotspot. Now add in a 3 course meal in a quality restaurant and a chance to help a local animal charity and a school project, sounds perfect.

Palm mar

Make a note in your diary, Sunday March 2 at the Rancho Restaurant from 4pm. For just 20 euros for adults and 15 euros for children under 10, you can enjoy the 3 course meal, entertainment, stalls and a bouncy castle for the kids, all in aid of K9 animal charity. It’s being staged by children from Britannia School and will count towards their Travel and Tourism A level course. During the afternoon, there will also be a raffle with a European city break as the main prize.

You are sure to be impressed at the natural sun trap that Palm Mar is, and the way the Guaza mountain shields it from the wind. Have a good look round, the beach will draw you towards the new maritime walkway and you will finally know just why everyone is talking about Palm Mar.

The birth of paradise

Looking at the bright modern face of Palm Mar, it’s difficult to imagine that it has such a long history. Tucked away in it’s natural valley between Guaza mountain and Malpais de Rasca natural park, it has developed into a stylish residential resort and few are aware of its history.

The October issue of FreshMagazine sheds new light on how the dream was born. It’s all down to Aman A Miran Khan from Afghanistan who moved to Tenerife with his family and in 1968 fell in love with Palm Mar.

Working with a local architect, Luis Cabrera, they created their vision but by 1973 it had been sold on to several other developers and it’s progress hit a quiet phase. Now though as more developments are completed, the dream is looking pretty impressive with a serene realxed setting that makes a perfect place to live.

Aman died in 1990 but his dream is flourishing and he is remembered with a commemorative stone in the heart of Palm Mar.

Hear the peace in Palm Mar

Palm Mar

Passing through the arched entrance to Palm Mar is like passing over a threshold into a softer more tranquil world. As a first time visitor, I just stood and looked down the main avenue, lined with cool shady palm trees and listened. No loud music, no traffic and no bustle of people rushing to save themselves a few seconds of time.

Lifted by the serene surroundings and keen to explore, I headed down past the small row of shops and bars and weaved through some of the smaller connecting streets past the modern stylish developments and down to the sea.

What a delightful promenade along the sea front, several people were making use of the benches in little alcoves while others just walked taking in the views. Looking across to Los Cristianos, it seemed a world away from this relaxed sun trap. The beach was a mix of keen swimmers, families with picnics, and a few lazy fishermen perched on rocks.

The towering rocky face of Guaza Mountain was keeping the wind down to a gentle breeze and a brisk walk later I found myself up near the start of Malpais de Rasca. The volcanic landscape leading to the candy striped lighthouse had attracted a few walkers but I just enjoyed the view and savoured the peace and quiet.

Golfers love Palm Mar

With top quality full size golf courses at nearby Amarilla, Golf del Sur, Las Americas and the 9 hole Las Palos in Las Galletas, Palm Mar is the perfect base for Tenerife golfers.

Every golfer needs a 19th hole, and in Palm Mar, it’s the Pam Bar in Edificio Flamingo on the main road down into the resort. The regulars there have formed the Palm Bar Golf Society which meets every 2 weeks to  take on the challenge of one of the local courses.

If you want to swell the current membership of 26 and enjoy the social side of the great game, just pop in to the bar, next to Banco Santander. Happy golfing.
